More Than Gifts: Celebrate Mum in Style

New Zealand traditions for Mother's Day include cards, flowers, and quality time spent together. But the Motueka Sunday Market offers something more: a chance to find the perfect gift, indulge in delicious treats, and create lasting memories with Mum in a beautiful and lively setting.

A Rich History of Celebrating Mothers

The tradition of celebrating mothers can be traced back to ancient civilisations who held festivals to honour mother goddesses.

Celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, Mothering Sunday in the UK holds a unique place in honoring mothers. Rooted in a centuries-old tradition of visiting one's "mother church," the day evolved into a time for families to reunite. Today, it's a beautiful blend of the old and new, with church services offered alongside the giving of cards, gifts of flowers or felt hats, and special meals to show appreciation for mothers and mother figures.

The modern iteration of Mother's Day, as we know it, has its roots in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the United States, Anna Jarvis is credited with starting the movement to establish a national Mother's Day holiday in honour of her own mother. New Zealand, like many other countries, adopted the American tradition, celebrating Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.
